Scanlon Arrives: Cardiff Finally Find Their Left-Back “Help”

Cardiff City announced the signing of Calum Scanlon on loan from Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The club have moved to address their left-back depth issue, adding genuine cover to bolster their squad, with Joel Bagan the only senior recognised option in that role prior to Scanlon’s arrival.

With the Bluebirds pushing for the Sky Bet League One title and an immediate return to the Championship, strengthening that area was a key step in shaping the Cardiff squad for the final run-in.

Why Cardiff City Needed Left-Back Cover

In recent weeks, manager Brian Barry-Murphy has regularly spoken about needing some “help” at left-back, the only area he has consistently referenced as needing reinforcement.

The minutes highlight just how much the Bluebirds have relied on Bagan in the first six months of this season.

In the league, no outfield Cardiff player has notched more minutes than Joel Bagan (2,333). He has played just seven minutes fewer than goalkeeper Nathan Trott (2,340), underlining the huge workload on the 24-year-old this season.

Scanlon’s arrival gives Bagan the chance for much-needed rest in certain games, while also providing the league leaders a capable alternative and different option in that role.

Scanlon’s Career So Far

Scanlon began his youth career at Birmingham City before joining Liverpool in December 2020 at the age of 15 for a reported fee of around £500,000.

He signed his first professional contract with the Reds in March 2022 and made his senior debut in October 2023, featuring in a 5-1 win over Toulouse at Anfield in the UEFA Europa League.

Another senior appearance followed from the bench against Union St.Gilloise in the same competition, and he then signed a new long-term contract in April 2024 after impressing in the academy setup.

His first senior loan came with Millwall in August 2024, where he made four Championship appearances and scored his first professional goal in a 2-2 draw against Cardiff at The Den in January 2025.

Injury Setbacks and a Fresh Start

It has been a tough journey for Scanlon, with his time at Millwall disrupted by a brutal run of injuries during what was an exciting move for the young man.

Shortly after arriving with The Lions, he suffered a stress fracture in his back just 12 minutes into his debut against Luton Town in September 2024, ruling him out for four months.

He returned to fitness with a start against Hull City in January and scored in his second straight start against Cardiff.

However, on his third consecutive start, he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury against Luton Town on January 25, 2025, which required major surgery.

The 20-year-old will now hope to put that “injury hell” behind him. On January 13, 2026, he returned to action with Liverpool U21s, playing 45 minutes in a friendly against Wrexham, notably 353 days since his last appearance.

Ahead of his loan to the Welsh capital, he started against Brighton U21s on Friday, playing 67 minutes as part of his managed return to competitive football.

With Barry-Murphy already showing he can carefully develop young loanees coming off the back of injuries, as seen with Omari Kellyman, Scanlon’s minutes will be managed smartly to build rhythm and fitness without overexposing him too soon.

Style of Play: Direct, Aggressive, and Built for Modern Football

Scanlon is an attack-minded left-back with the engine to get up and down the pitch. He has also shown he can play higher up at times, operating effectively as a wing-back/winger also.

The youngster has serious pace, and independent Liverpool academy reporter Lewis Bower described him as a player who has “bulked up impressively”, a trait that will help him cope with the physical nature of the third tier.

Bower also noted Scanlon’s “wicked delivery from the left”, with whipped crosses that carry real pace. The kind of final-ball threat which Cardiff’s forwards, particularly talisman Yousef Salech can thrive on.

Where He Fits Under Brian Barry-Murphy

Under Barry-Murphy, Cardiff have become a side built around control and structure, with both full-backs encouraged to push forward to support attacks and create overloads in wide areas.

Coming through the Liverpool system, Scanlon has proven to be comfortable on the ball and can provide a direct, pacy alternative at left-back while also being capable of operating higher up the pitch as a left-winger if needed.

Cardiff’s ability to attract young loanees from elite Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool reflects Barry-Murphy's track record of developing high-end talent in a controlled environment, while maintaining an attacking possession-based philosophy similar to that of these top Premier League sides.

A knock-on benefit of this move is that 18-year-old Ronan Kpakio can now return to his favoured right-back role after struggling on the left. He deputised for Bagan at left-back to give the Irishman some rest, but showed signs of struggling at times.

Earlier in the season, Kpakio thrived at right-back and was touted as one of the most exciting prospects in the EFL. The Welshman has registered six assists this season and was at one point the top assister in the division.

With Scanlon’s arrival, the teenager can compete with Perry Ng in the right-back role, giving Cardiff two strong options on both sides.

While Scanlon won’t arrive as a guaranteed starter, with Bagan one of Cardiff’s most reliable performers this season, he does offer genuine competition and depth for a massive run-in for the Bluebirds.

Final Thoughts

If he stays fit, the Birmingham-born full-back could prove to be a low-risk, high-reward addition in a key position that Cardiff simply could not afford to leave short in this window.

His arrival also means that the league leaders now have a strong cohort of full-backs, with two capable and different options for each side, giving Barry-Murphy both depth and big competition as his team continue their push for the League One title.
