Cardiff City travel to the LNER Stadium this Saturday to face Lincoln City in a key Sky Bet League One clash near the top of the table. The Bluebirds are looking to extend their lead at the summit, while Michael Skubala’s side aim to close in on the automatic promotion places, sitting just two points behind Bradford City.
The fixture promises to be a fascinating tactical contest. Although both teams line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, their approaches could not be any more different. Cardiff seek control through sustained spells of possession, while Lincoln are comfortable without the ball, focusing on compact organisation, quick transitions and set-piece efficiency.

Team News
Cardiff remain without Ollie Tanner, who is close to a return but is unlikely to feature, while Gabriel Osho is also nearing fitness; however, this fixture comes too soon. Long-term absentees Rubin Colwill and Eli King remain sidelined.
Lincoln are without Oscar Thorn and Fin Barbrook, both sidelined with ankle injuries. Adam Jackson is unlikely to feature due to a hernia issue, while former Cardiff striker James Collins has been ruled out for the season after sustaining a serious knee injury.
Form
Brian Barry-Murphy’s side arrive in strong form, having won five consecutive League One matches to move four points clear at the top of the table. Cardiff also drew plenty of plaudits in midweek despite exiting the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage, producing a competitive performance against world champions Chelsea at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Michael Skubala’s men have made an equally impressive start to the campaign and currently sit third, just two points outside the automatic promotion places. In their last five league outings, Lincoln have recorded three wins, one draw, and one defeat, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top two finish.
They are also chasing a historic return to the second tier for the first time since the 1960/61 season under legendary manager Bill Anderson.
Tactical Battle
Although both teams typically line up in a 4-2-3-1, the contrast in approach is huge. Cardiff will look to dominate possession, averaging 61.1% per game (1st in League One), gaining control through patient movement of the ball and wide overloads to create chances for Yousef Salech and co.
Lincoln, by contrast, average just 41.7% possession, the lowest in the division. Michael Skubala’s side are comfortable operating without the ball, defending from a compact mid-block and controlling games through organisation rather than possession. When they regain the ball, their focus is on moving it quickly, attacking in transition, and maximising set-piece situations, which remain a key source of goals.
Key Stats Comparison (via FotMob)
Stat | Lincoln City | Cardiff City | Advantage |
Goals Per Match | 1.40 | 1.90 | Cardiff |
Goals Conceded Per Match | 1.10 | 1.10 | Equal |
Average Possession | 41.7% | 61.1% | Cardiff |

xG For | 25.0 | 30.6 | Cardiff |
xG Against | 24.2 | 25.7 | Lincoln |
Big Chances Created | 43 | 56 | Cardiff |
Possession Won in Final 3rd Per Match | 3.40 | 4.10 | Cardiff |
Goals from Open Play | 15 | 29 | Cardiff |
Set Piece Goals | 8 | 4 | Lincoln |
These numbers underline the tactical contrast. Cardiff are the league’s dominant possession side, combining an aggressive high press with creativity in open play, as reflected by their 29 open-play goals and 56 big chances created. They overwhelm opponents territorially but can be exposed if their press is bypassed.
Lincoln, meanwhile, represent the opposite end of the spectrum. Despite fewer chances and significantly less possession, they remain competitive through discipline, efficiency, and set-piece strength, doubling Cardiff’s output in dead-ball situations. Their compact structure and physical presence make them particularly awkward opponents for possession-heavy sides.
What’s Been Said
Brian Barry-Murphy said: “It’s a very daunting task, but one we’re looking forward to and one that we’re going to try and overcome.”
Michael Skubala said: “It’s funny, everyone says that we don’t want the ball. We do want the ball! The difference is we want to attack quick. We’re probably less patient with the ball … so we’re prepared to put it at risk more to go forward and score.”
Previous Meeting
The last competitive meeting between the sides came over 24 years ago, when Lincoln claimed a 2-0 victory during the 2000/01 League Two season. Cardiff went on to secure promotion under Bobby Gould that year and have not returned to the fourth tier since.
Verdict
Cardiff’s dominance in possession and in-form attacking options, including top scorer Yousef Salech, should give them the edge in a tight contest here.
Lincoln’s efficiency on the counter and their strong defensive shape ensure they will be competitive, with chances likely at both ends. However, Cardiff have enough quality to decide the outcome and secure a sixth consecutive league win to stretch their lead at the top of the division.
Score Prediction: Lincoln City 1-2 Cardiff City
